Entry 2

Describe the work atmosphere. How are decisions made, is it cooperative or competitive, what is the dress code and work ethic of the organization?

The work atmosphere is generally calm and quiet with a few conversations whether it is a conference call or personal discussion. The building is naturally and artificially well-lit with lots of surrounding greenery and pathways outdoors. There are little to no stress factors in the work environment. Decisions are made, in my experience so far, through cooperation. Multiple strings of emails or Sametime (in-company messaging) are used to collaborate with coworkers and supervisors to make decisions. These forms of communication are used to prevent schedule mix-ups and confusion. If needed, meetings are rescheduled without hassle. Most decisions so far have flowed nicely.

Dress code of the company is business casual. This is usually a simple polo with dress pants or khakis, and dress shoes. Ties are rarely seen worn in the company on a daily basis. Fridays are called casual Friday where employees can wear jeans instead of dress pants. As stated, the workplace is calm and relaxed. Work ethics of the organization are included in its standards: Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, and Expertise.

Entry 1

Define the purpose of the business/organization – what they do, structure, who are the customers, etc. What is your job description – what will you be doing, who will you work with, where do you fit in?

The generic purpose of Fidelity Investments is “To make financial expertise broadly accessible and effective in helping people live the lives they want.” Basic company standards include Responsibility, Integrity, Compassion, and Expertise.  Fidelity serves a wide range of customers such as Individual Investors, Employers, Advisers, and Institutions through its Personal Investing or Workplace Investing programs. The company offers a variety of options including IRAs, annuities, brokerage products, college fund accounts, and employee investments, record-keeping, and defined benefits.

My official job description is Technical Intern. This is a widely-applied term and can be defined in many ways. I will be working specifically under the Strategic Investment Products and Data (SIPD) department with the Advanced Analytics Environment (AAE) team. I will be working with other high school and college interns in addition to my team to work on small projects and learn how to work in an office environment on a daily basis.
