Entry 9

What major problems or frustrations have you experienced or observed in your work? How did you handle it?

I have experienced some boredom and lack of work during my internship. I handled it by first talking to my manager to check if there was anything at all that needed to be done that I could work on. After that, I talked with my fellow Apex High interns to see what I could help them with. I also worked on these journal entries and also self-taught SQL. All of these in addition to the Fidelity Intern project ( a powerpoint presentation that all interns made together) I stayed generally occupied.

Entry 8

What have you learned about yourself and what you want in a career?

I have learned that I like the work environment of IT. I want to have an open office environment with a modern feel. I am interested in computer engineering / computer science field but don't know specifically  what I want to do from that point. My college plans have not changed necessarily as I still want a 4 year degree and a masters later on.

Entry 7

How has this experience affected or changed your career/college plans?

I have gotten a taste of what working in an office of IT would look and feel like but I have not really experienced what kind of work I would actually be doing because of both the lack of my expertise in the field and the lack of things available to do during my internship. I am still interested in Computer Science/Engineering degree but am unable to point my finger on what exactly I want to do in that field (because it is a wide range of jobs). This experience has not directly impacted my opinion and plans. However, I am still interested in IT.

Entry 6

How have your duties changed since you first started? Have you been given more responsibility?

My duties have not necessarily been changed. My responsibility has been the same if not less. I am continuing to practice SQL and have done some practice programs and commands. I recently downloaded a simulated SQL/Oracle database and have been tinkering with it. I can move around file classes and input commands to see what the output would be if I was operating on a real database (Greenplum for Fidelity). Other than that I have been attending meetings with my manager to get an idea of what he does and meeting with fellow Apex High School interns to see what is going on with their internships.

Entry 5

What do you feel is your main contribution to your internship? What have you done at your internship that makes you proud? Why?

My main contribution to my internship is to simply help with any side work that my manager or fellow interns need or Intern Projects from HR. Something that will make me feel proud (once I have completed it) is the test casing document required for the Security Team project website for Fidelity. I am almost done with it and once I have done so, I will have assisted in a somewhat large-scale project for Fidelity's security website.

Other than that, I have not necessarily contributed to a point where I would be proud of my work. I am satisfied otherwise.

Entry 4

How is the internship meeting or not meeting your expectations/objectives and why? Do you have control of this? Explain.

I did know what to expect for this internship as I have had no professional work experience. I did expect it to be engaging in any way shape or form and interesting as well. I am also honored to be working in such a large company. So far it is meeting my expectations. However, I do not have much work to do so I am filling my time by self-learning SQL online. I was surprised by the fact that my manager did not know that I was supposed to be interning under him but everything is running ok. He has assigned me a small task which is a part of a project that another intern from a different state is also working on. It is just starting but I am excited to get working on it.

I do have some control as I am in a position to step forward and ask my manager what I can do. However, If he says that there isn't anything for me to actively work on I may need to reach out to fellow interns and see if they have anything they need help with.

Entry 3

How have your classroom experiences prepared you for the internship? What do you wish you had learned prior to the internship?

Many classroom experiences have helped me for this internship. Interactions with peers and teachers helped me with different kinds of communication at work with fellow interns versus with my manager. Also, technological classes have given me skills from basic Microsoft to programming such as SAS and C#. I wish that I had learned some SQL as well since that was used most often at my internship. I also wish that I had learned how to manage time better when I had nothing much to do.
